Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• あっさり擬態語State / textureしつこくなく、淡白な様子。意外に簡単にの意も。easily / lightly (in taste) / plainly強敵にあっさり負けてしまった。I lost to the strong opponent surprisingly easily.
• うっすら擬態語State / textureごく薄く、かすかに見える・積もる様子。色・光・雪・涙などが少しだけある状態に使う。faintly; thinly; slightly (a thin layer or trace)山の頂にうっすらと雪が積もっている。A thin layer of snow has settled on the mountaintop.
• かちかち擬態語State / texture水分がなく石のように固い様子。緊張で体がこわばる様子にも使う。rock-hard; frozen stiff / tense and rigid餅が冷えてかちかちになった。The mochi went rock-hard as it cooled.
• がっちり擬態語State / texture頑丈で隙のない様子。お金にしっかりの意も。solidly built; sturdy / shrewd with money彼はがっちりした体格だ。He has a solidly built physique.
• がらり擬態語State / texture様子や態度が突然、すっかり変わる様子。「がらりと変わる」の形が定番で、変化の大きさを強調する。completely (changing all at once); a total, abrupt change彼女は社長になって態度ががらりと変わった。Her attitude changed completely once she became president.
• きっかり擬態語State / texture数量や時刻が端数なくぴったり合う様子。「ちょうど」を強めた言い方で、半端がないことを際立たせる。exactly; on the dot; with no remainder (of time or quantity)会議は十時きっかりに始まった。The meeting began at exactly ten o'clock.
• ぎっしり擬態語State / texture中身がすきまなく詰まっている様子。packed tightly; crammed full箱に本がぎっしり詰まっている。The box is crammed full of books.
• きらきら擬態語State / texture光が美しくまたたく様子。sparkling; glittering; twinkling星がきらきら輝いている。The stars are twinkling brightly.
• ぐっしょり擬態語State / texture汗や水で全体がびしょびしょに濡れる様子。「びっしょり」とほぼ同義で、濡れ方の甚だしさを表す。soaked through; drenched (with sweat or rain)悪夢を見て、汗でぐっしょりになって目が覚めた。I woke from a nightmare drenched in sweat.
• ぐらぐら擬態語State / texture固定されず大きく揺れ動く様子。湯がぐらぐらと煮え立つ意でも使う。wobbly and unstable / boiling vigorouslyこの机は脚がぐらぐらする。This desk has wobbly legs.
• ごつごつ擬態語State / texture表面に固い出っ張りがあって、ごわごわした様子。岩や節くれだった手などに。rugged, knobbly and hard (of a surface or shape)ごつごつした岩場を登った。I climbed up the rugged, rocky terrain.
• こってり擬態語State / texture味や色が濃く、しつこい様子。rich; heavy; thick (especially of flavour)こってりしたラーメンが食べたい。I want some rich, heavy ramen.
• こんがり擬態語State / textureパンや肉などがほどよく焼けて、おいしそうな茶色になる様子。焦げる手前の理想的な焼き色を指す。golden-brown; nicely toasted or grilledトーストがこんがり焼けた。The toast came out a nice golden brown.
• さっぱり擬態語State / textureさわやかであっさりした様子。否定と使うと「全然〜ない」。refreshed; light (taste) / not at all (with a negative)シャワーを浴びてさっぱりした。I felt refreshed after a shower.
• さらさら擬態語State / texture湿りけや粘りがなく、なめらかに流れる様子。髪・水・砂などに使う。smooth and dry; flowing freely without stickiness彼女の髪はさらさらだ。Her hair is smooth and silky.
• ざらざら擬態語State / texture表面に細かい凹凸があって、なめらかでない様子。砂やかさついた肌などに。rough and gritty (of a surface)肌が乾燥してざらざらしている。My skin is dry and rough.
• しっとり擬態語State / textureほどよく湿り気を帯びた様子。転じて、落ち着いて品のある雰囲気や人柄を表すこともある。moist; damp / calm and refined (of mood or manner)雨上がりの庭はしっとりと濡れていた。The garden was moist and glistening after the rain.
• すっかり擬態語State / texture残らず全部。状態がすっかり変わったことを表す。completely; entirely (a change is now total)約束をすっかり忘れていた。I'd completely forgotten about the promise.
• ずらり擬態語State / texture同種のものが数多く一列に並ぶ様子。多さ・壮観さに感心するニュアンスを含む。in an impressive row; lined up in great numbers店頭に新商品がずらりと並んでいる。The new products are lined up in an impressive row at the storefront.
• たっぷり擬態語State / texture十分すぎるほど多い様子。plenty; amply; a generous amount時間はたっぷりある。We have plenty of time.
• つるつる擬態語State / texture表面がなめらかで、よくすべる様子。smooth and slippery凍った道がつるつるだ。The frozen road is slippery.
• どっしり擬態語State / texture重く安定して動じない様子。物の重量感だけでなく、落ち着いて貫禄のある態度にも使う。massive and steady; weighty / calm and unshakeable彼は何があってもどっしり構えている。Whatever happens, he stays calm and unshakeable.
• どんより擬態語State / texture空や気分が重く沈んで、はっきりしない様子。gloomy; overcast; dull (sky, mood, eyes)空がどんよりと曇っている。The sky is heavily overcast.
• ぬるぬる擬態語State / textureぬめりがあってつかみにくい様子。うなぎや石けんのついた手などに。slimy and slipperyうなぎはぬるぬるして手でつかめない。An eel is so slimy you can't grab it by hand.
• ねばねば擬態語State / texture糸を引くように粘る様子。納豆やオクラなどの食感に多く使う。sticky and gooey; viscous and stringy納豆はねばねばしている。Natto is sticky and stringy.
• ぱさぱさ擬態語State / texture水分や脂けが抜けて、うるおいがない様子。パン・ご飯・髪などに。dry and crumbly; lacking moisture古いパンはぱさぱさだ。Old bread is dry and crumbly.
• ぴかぴか擬態語State / texture光るほど磨かれて新しい様子。shiny; gleaming; spotlessly clean床をぴかぴかに磨いた。I polished the floor until it gleamed.
• びっしり擬態語State / textureすきまなくぎっしり詰まっている様子。densely; packed tightly with no gaps手帳は予定でびっしりだ。My planner is packed solid with appointments.
• ぴったり擬態語State / textureすきまなく合う様子。サイズ・組み合わせ・時刻に。a perfect fit; exactly matching; snuglyこのドレスは私にぴったりだ。This dress fits me perfectly.
• ひんやり擬態語State / texture冷たく感じる様子。多く心地よい涼しさに。pleasantly cool; chilly to the touch洞窟の中はひんやりしていた。It was pleasantly cool inside the cave.
