Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• うっかり擬態語Manner不注意で、つい。気をつけていればしなかった失敗に使う。carelessly; absent-mindedly (doing something by mistake)うっかり傘を電車に忘れてしまった。I carelessly left my umbrella on the train.
• おどおど擬態語Manner自信がなく、態度や視線が落ち着かない様子。びくびくが内心の恐れなら、こちらは外に表れた挙動を指す。nervously timid; ill at ease (in attitude and bearing)面接で緊張し、おどおどしてしまった。I got nervous in the interview and came across as timid.
• がっつり擬態語Manner遠慮なくたっぷり、思い切り行う様子。話し言葉で、特にしっかり食べる・本格的に取り組む意に使う若者寄りの語。heartily; in a big way; thoroughly (colloquial, esp. eating)今日は焼肉をがっつり食べたい。Today I want to eat a hearty pile of grilled meat.
• きっちり擬態語Manner過不足なく、きちんと。時間・数量・整理に使う。exactly; precisely; tidily (no gaps or excess)代金をきっちり計算して支払った。I worked out the bill exactly and paid it.
• きっぱり擬態語Mannerためらわず、はっきりと。断るときによく使う。flatly; firmly; decisively (especially refusing)彼の誘いをきっぱり断った。I turned down his invitation flatly.
• ぐずぐず擬態語Manner決断や行動が遅く、ぐずついて手間取る様子。不平を言いながらぐずる意でも使う。dawdling; dilly-dallying; being slow to actぐずぐずしていると電車に遅れるよ。If you keep dawdling, you'll miss the train.
• こっそり擬態語Manner人に気づかれないように、ひそかに。secretly; stealthily (so others won't notice)妹のケーキをこっそり食べた。I secretly ate my little sister's cake.
• ごろごろ擬態語Manner何もせず寝転んで過ごす様子。大きな物が転がる・散らばる様子や雷の音にも。lounging idly / large objects scattered about / a rumbling roll休日は一日中ごろごろしていた。I lounged around all day on my day off.
• さらり擬態語Manner物事を軽やかに、こだわりなくやってのける様子。質感では、べたつかずさらさらした感触を指す。lightly and smoothly; with no fuss / dry and non-sticky to the touch彼は嫌味をさらりと受け流した。He brushed off the snide remark with ease.
• しっかり擬態語Manner確実で、ぐらつかない様子。「しっかりやる」で確実に行う意。firmly; securely; properly (reliably, with effort)手すりをしっかり握ってください。Please hold the handrail firmly.
• じっくり擬態語Manner焦らず時間をかけて、念入りに取り組む様子。落ち着いて十分に行うことを強調する。thoroughly and unhurriedly; taking one's time over something結論を出す前にじっくり考えたい。I want to think it over carefully before reaching a conclusion.
• すんなり擬態語Manner抵抗や手間なく物事が運ぶ様子。また、細くしなやかに伸びた形を表すこともある。smoothly; without a hitch / slim and graceful交渉は思ったよりすんなりまとまった。The negotiations came together more smoothly than expected.
• だらだら擬態語Mannerしまりなく、長々と続く様子。汗が流れる意も。sluggishly; draggingly; without focusだらだらと過ごして一日が終わった。The day ended after I'd frittered it away.
• ちゃっかり擬態語Mannerぬけめなく、自分の得になるように振る舞う様子。cheekily shrewd; looking out for one's own gain彼女はちゃっかり一番いい席を取った。She cheekily grabbed the best seat.
• てきぱき擬態語Manner仕事などを手際よく、すばやく進める様子。briskly and efficiently; without wasted motion彼女はてきぱきと仕事をこなす。She handles her work briskly and efficiently.
• のんびり擬態語Manner気楽でゆったりした様子。急がず、のんき。relaxed; at a leisurely, unhurried pace休日は家でのんびり過ごす。On days off I relax at home.
• はっきり擬態語Mannerあいまいでなく、明確に。見え方・言い方の両方に使う。clearly; distinctly; plainly自分の意見をはっきり言った。I stated my opinion clearly.
• ばっちり擬態語Manner申し分なく、完璧に。話し言葉で自信を込めて使う。perfectly; just right (informal, with confidence)準備はばっちりだ。I'm all set — everything's ready.
• ひっそり擬態語Manner物音もなく静かな様子。人目を避ける意でも。quietly; silently; still (no sign of activity)夜の街はひっそりしていた。The town was still and quiet at night.
• ぺらぺら擬態語Manner外国語を流暢に話す様子。紙などが薄っぺらの意も。fluently (speaking a language) / thin and flimsy彼は英語がぺらぺらだ。He speaks English fluently.
• ぼちぼち擬態語Mannerゆっくり少しずつ進める様子。「そろそろ」の意や、調子を問われて「まあまあ」と答える返事にも使う関西寄りの語。little by little; so-so / about time to (do something)そろそろぼちぼち帰ろうか。It's about time we started heading home.
• ぼんやり擬態語Mannerぼやけている、または気が抜けている様子。vaguely; absent-mindedly; hazilyぼんやり窓の外を眺めていた。I was gazing absent-mindedly out the window.
• もじもじ擬態語Manner恥ずかしさや遠慮から、はっきり言動に移せずもたもたする様子。fidgeting bashfully; squirming with hesitation彼女はもじもじして何も言えなかった。She fidgeted bashfully and couldn't say a word.
• やんわり擬態語Manner角が立たないよう、おだやかに。gently; softly (especially when refusing or warning)やんわりと注意した。I cautioned her gently.
