Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• うろうろ擬態語Motion目的もなく、あちこち動き回る様子。落ち着きなく、やや不審・迷惑な響きを伴うことが多い。wandering around aimlessly; loitering restlessly出口が分からず駅の構内をうろうろした。I couldn't find the exit and wandered around the station.
• ぐるぐる擬態語Motion同じ所を何度も回る様子。包帯などを巻きつける動作にも使う。round and round; winding repeatedly aroundコーヒーをスプーンでぐるぐるかき混ぜた。I stirred the coffee round and round with a spoon.
• ぐるり擬態語Motionぐるりと一周する／取り囲む様子。視線や体の向きをぐるっと回すときにも使う。「ぐるっと」よりやや改まった響き。all the way around; in a full circle (turning or encircling)城の周りをぐるりと堀が囲んでいる。A moat encircles the castle all the way around.
• ぐんぐん擬態語Motion勢いよく、目に見えて進歩・成長・上昇する様子。steadily and rapidly; by leaps and bounds (growing or advancing)練習するうちに実力がぐんぐん伸びた。As I practised, my skills improved by leaps and bounds.
• こっくり擬態語Motion眠気で頭が前にかくんと傾く様子。「こっくりこっくり」と繰り返す形が多い。nodding off; head bobbing forward in drowsiness授業中、彼はこっくりと舟をこいでいた。He kept nodding off during the lecture.
• のっそり擬態語Motion動作が遅く、いかにも鈍重な様子。大きな体がゆっくり動くさまや、のんびりした態度に使う。ponderously; sluggishly (moving slowly and heavily)熊が森からのっそり現れた。A bear lumbered ponderously out of the forest.
• のろのろ擬態語Motion動きや進み方が遅く、もどかしい様子。「のろのろ運転」など、いらだちを込めて使うことが多い。sluggishly slow; at a crawl (irritatingly slow movement)車が渋滞でのろのろ進んでいる。The cars are crawling along in the traffic jam.
• ぴたり擬態語Motion動いていたものが急に止まる様子。また、予想や寸法がぴったり一致する様子にも使う。coming to a dead stop / fitting or matching exactly薬を飲んだら咳がぴたりと止まった。Once I took the medicine, my cough stopped dead.
• ひょっこり擬態語Motion思いがけず、ふいに現れる様子。前触れもなく姿を見せる意外性を表す。unexpectedly; popping up out of the blue旧友がひょっこり訪ねてきた。An old friend dropped by out of the blue.
• ゆっくり擬態語Motion速度が遅い、または焦らずゆとりがある様子。slowly; leisurely; take your timeもっとゆっくり話してください。Please speak more slowly.
