Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• いらいら擬態語Feeling思い通りにならず、いらだつ様子。irritated; frustrated; on edge渋滞でいらいらした。The traffic jam left me irritated.
• うきうき擬態語Feelingうれしくて心が浮き立ち、楽しくてたまらない様子。わくわくより、すでに弾んだ気分が表に出ている。cheerful and buoyant; light-hearted with happy anticipation明日の遠足を思うとうきうきする。I feel buoyant thinking about tomorrow's outing.
• うずうず擬態語Feeling何かをしたくてたまらず、じっとしていられない様子。多く「〜したくてうずうずする」の形で。itching to do something; raring to go (can hardly hold back)新しいゲームを試したくてうずうずしている。I'm itching to try out the new game.
• うっとり擬態語Feeling美しさなどに心を奪われ、ぼうっとなる様子。entranced; spellbound; enraptured美しい音楽にうっとりした。I was entranced by the beautiful music.
• うんざり擬態語Feeling同じことが続いて、もう嫌だと感じる様子。fed up; sick of; thoroughly tired of長い会議にうんざりした。I was fed up with the long meeting.
• がっかり擬態語Feeling期待が外れて気落ちする様子。disappointed; let down試合が中止になってがっかりした。I was disappointed the match was cancelled.
• がっくり擬態語Feeling急に力や気力が抜けて落ち込む様子。crestfallen; suddenly dispirited / sagging不合格と知ってがっくりした。I was crestfallen to learn I'd failed.
• くよくよ擬態語Feeling済んだことや小さなことを、いつまでも気に病む様子。「くよくよするな」と励ます形が定番。fretting; brooding over trifles; dwelling on worries失敗をくよくよ考えても仕方がない。There's no use brooding over a mistake.
• しくしく擬態語Feeling声をひそめて弱々しく泣く様子。また、腹などが鈍く痛み続ける様子にも使う。sobbing quietly / a dull, persistent ache (esp. stomach)子供が部屋の隅でしくしく泣いていた。The child was sobbing quietly in the corner of the room.
• すっきり擬態語Feeling余計なものがなく、気分や状態がさわやかな様子。refreshed; clear; uncluttered部屋を片づけたら気分がすっきりした。Tidying the room left me feeling refreshed.
• ぞくぞく擬態語Feeling寒さや恐れ、また強い興奮で背筋がふるえる様子。悪寒と高揚の両方に使えるのが特徴。shivering — with a thrill of excitement or a chill結末を思うと興奮でぞくぞくする。Thinking about the ending sends a thrill down my spine.
• そわそわ擬態語Feeling落ち着かず、気持ちが定まらない様子。restless; fidgety; unable to settle彼は朝からそわそわしている。He's been restless since morning.
• どきどき擬態語Feeling緊張や興奮で胸が高鳴る様子。heart pounding (from nerves or excitement)面接の前はどきどきした。My heart was pounding before the interview.
• にっこり擬態語Feeling声を立てず、にこやかにほほえむ様子。with a warm smile; beaming赤ちゃんがにっこり笑った。The baby gave a warm smile.
• はらはら擬態語Feeling成り行きを案じて気が気でない様子。花びらや涙が静かに散り落ちる様子にも使う。on edge with worry; watching anxiously / fluttering down (petals, tears)綱渡りを見て、はらはらした。Watching the tightrope walk kept me on edge.
• びくびく擬態語Feeling悪いことが起きないかと、絶えずおびえている様子。叱られる・ばれるのを恐れる場面に多い。nervously fearful; jumpy; on edge (dreading something bad)ばれるのではないかとびくびくしていた。I was on edge, afraid I'd be found out.
• ぷりぷり擬態語Feeling怒って機嫌が悪い様子。一方、えびなどが弾力に富む食感を表す意もあり、文脈で読み分ける。in a huff; visibly cross / plump and springy (of texture)何が気に入らないのか、彼女はぷりぷりしている。Something's upset her — she's in a real huff.
• めそめそ擬態語Feeling声を抑えてめめしく泣き続ける様子。いつまでもくよくよ泣く弱々しさを、やや批判的に言う。snivelling; weeping feebly (and rather pathetically)いつまでもめそめそするな。Stop snivelling about it already.
• わくわく擬態語Feelingうれしいことを期待して心がはずむ様子。thrilled; excited with happy anticipation旅行を前にわくわくしている。I'm thrilled with the trip coming up.
