- （きた）方位の一つ。地球上では、太陽の昇る方角を向いて左。その他の天体では、2つの極（自転軸と地表との交点）のうち、惑星については、北極星（地球の自転軸の北極側の延長）に近い方の極を北極とし、また小惑星や彗星は、自転が右まわり（時計回り）に見える位置から見て、向こう側の極を北極として、地表において北極の方角を北とする。
