Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• ぷるぷる擬態語State / textureゼリーやプリンのように、弾力があって細かく揺れる様子。jiggly and wobbly with springy elasticityプリンがぷるぷる揺れている。The pudding is wobbling and jiggly.
• ふわふわ擬態語State / textureやわらかく軽い様子。物の手ざわりにも、地に足がつかない気分にも使う。soft and fluffy; light and floating焼きたてのパンはふわふわだ。Fresh-baked bread is soft and fluffy.
• ぺこぺこ擬態語Body / condition空腹でたまらない様子。「お腹がぺこぺこ」の形が定番。へつらう意もある。very hungry; stomach empty朝から何も食べていなくてお腹がぺこぺこだ。I haven't eaten since morning, so I'm starving.
• べたべた擬態語State / texture表面が粘りついて手に張りつく様子。人にまとわりつく態度にも使う。sticky and tacky to the touch; clingy汗で体がべたべたする。My body feels sticky with sweat.
• へとへと擬態語Body / condition体力を使い果たして、ぐったりした様子。completely worn out; drained残業続きでへとへとだ。I'm completely worn out from all the overtime.
• ぺらぺら擬態語Manner外国語を流暢に話す様子。紙などが薄っぺらの意も。fluently (speaking a language) / thin and flimsy彼は英語がぺらぺらだ。He speaks English fluently.
• ぼちぼち擬態語Mannerゆっくり少しずつ進める様子。「そろそろ」の意や、調子を問われて「まあまあ」と答える返事にも使う関西寄りの語。little by little; so-so / about time to (do something)そろそろぼちぼち帰ろうか。It's about time we started heading home.
• ほっそり擬態語Body / condition細くてすらりとした体つきの様子。「やせ細る」と違い、上品で好ましい細さを表す。slender; slim (of a graceful figure)彼女はほっそりとした体つきをしている。She has a slender figure.
• ぼろぼろ擬態語State / texture使い古して傷み、ちぎれたり崩れたりした様子。物にも、心身が疲弊した状態にも使う。worn out; tattered; crumbling to pieces長年使った辞書はもうぼろぼろだ。The dictionary I've used for years is falling apart now.
• ぼんやり擬態語Mannerぼやけている、または気が抜けている様子。vaguely; absent-mindedly; hazilyぼんやり窓の外を眺めていた。I was gazing absent-mindedly out the window.
• むかむか擬態語Body / condition吐き気がこみ上げる様子。比喩的に、怒りがこみ上げて腹立たしい様子にも使う。feeling nauseous / seething with anger脂っこい料理で胃がむかむかする。The greasy food is making me feel queasy.
• めそめそ擬態語Feeling声を抑えてめめしく泣き続ける様子。いつまでもくよくよ泣く弱々しさを、やや批判的に言う。snivelling; weeping feebly (and rather pathetically)いつまでもめそめそするな。Stop snivelling about it already.
• めっきり擬態語State / texture変化がはっきり分かるほど。多く季節・体力などに。markedly; noticeably (of a change)めっきり寒くなってきた。It's gotten noticeably colder.
• もじもじ擬態語Manner恥ずかしさや遠慮から、はっきり言動に移せずもたもたする様子。fidgeting bashfully; squirming with hesitation彼女はもじもじして何も言えなかった。She fidgeted bashfully and couldn't say a word.
• もちもち擬態語State / textureもちのように弾力があって、よく伸びる食感。パンや肌の質感にも。soft, springy and chewy (of texture)このうどんはもちもちしている。These udon noodles are wonderfully chewy.
• やんわり擬態語Manner角が立たないよう、おだやかに。gently; softly (especially when refusing or warning)やんわりと注意した。I cautioned her gently.
• ゆっくり擬態語Motion速度が遅い、または焦らずゆとりがある様子。slowly; leisurely; take your timeもっとゆっくり話してください。Please speak more slowly.
• わくわく擬態語Feelingうれしいことを期待して心がはずむ様子。thrilled; excited with happy anticipation旅行を前にわくわくしている。I'm thrilled with the trip coming up.
• わんわん擬音語Sound犬の鳴き声。大声で泣く様子にも。woof-woof (a dog's bark) / wailing loudly犬がわんわん吠えている。The dog is barking woof-woof.
