Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• だらだら擬態語Mannerしまりなく、長々と続く様子。汗が流れる意も。sluggishly; draggingly; without focusだらだらと過ごして一日が終わった。The day ended after I'd frittered it away.
• ちゃっかり擬態語Mannerぬけめなく、自分の得になるように振る舞う様子。cheekily shrewd; looking out for one's own gain彼女はちゃっかり一番いい席を取った。She cheekily grabbed the best seat.
• つるつる擬態語State / texture表面がなめらかで、よくすべる様子。smooth and slippery凍った道がつるつるだ。The frozen road is slippery.
• てきぱき擬態語Manner仕事などを手際よく、すばやく進める様子。briskly and efficiently; without wasted motion彼女はてきぱきと仕事をこなす。She handles her work briskly and efficiently.
• どきどき擬態語Feeling緊張や興奮で胸が高鳴る様子。heart pounding (from nerves or excitement)面接の前はどきどきした。My heart was pounding before the interview.
• どっしり擬態語State / texture重く安定して動じない様子。物の重量感だけでなく、落ち着いて貫禄のある態度にも使う。massive and steady; weighty / calm and unshakeable彼は何があってもどっしり構えている。Whatever happens, he stays calm and unshakeable.
• どんより擬態語State / texture空や気分が重く沈んで、はっきりしない様子。gloomy; overcast; dull (sky, mood, eyes)空がどんよりと曇っている。The sky is heavily overcast.
• にっこり擬態語Feeling声を立てず、にこやかにほほえむ様子。with a warm smile; beaming赤ちゃんがにっこり笑った。The baby gave a warm smile.
• ぬるぬる擬態語State / textureぬめりがあってつかみにくい様子。うなぎや石けんのついた手などに。slimy and slipperyうなぎはぬるぬるして手でつかめない。An eel is so slimy you can't grab it by hand.
• ねばねば擬態語State / texture糸を引くように粘る様子。納豆やオクラなどの食感に多く使う。sticky and gooey; viscous and stringy納豆はねばねばしている。Natto is sticky and stringy.
• のっそり擬態語Motion動作が遅く、いかにも鈍重な様子。大きな体がゆっくり動くさまや、のんびりした態度に使う。ponderously; sluggishly (moving slowly and heavily)熊が森からのっそり現れた。A bear lumbered ponderously out of the forest.
• のろのろ擬態語Motion動きや進み方が遅く、もどかしい様子。「のろのろ運転」など、いらだちを込めて使うことが多い。sluggishly slow; at a crawl (irritatingly slow movement)車が渋滞でのろのろ進んでいる。The cars are crawling along in the traffic jam.
• のんびり擬態語Manner気楽でゆったりした様子。急がず、のんき。relaxed; at a leisurely, unhurried pace休日は家でのんびり過ごす。On days off I relax at home.
• ぱさぱさ擬態語State / texture水分や脂けが抜けて、うるおいがない様子。パン・ご飯・髪などに。dry and crumbly; lacking moisture古いパンはぱさぱさだ。Old bread is dry and crumbly.
• ぱちぱち擬音語Sound火がはぜる音や、手をたたく音。まばたきを繰り返す様子にも。crackling (of a fire) / clapping of handsたき火がぱちぱちと音を立てて燃えている。The bonfire is burning with a crackling sound.
• はっきり擬態語Mannerあいまいでなく、明確に。見え方・言い方の両方に使う。clearly; distinctly; plainly自分の意見をはっきり言った。I stated my opinion clearly.
• ばっちり擬態語Manner申し分なく、完璧に。話し言葉で自信を込めて使う。perfectly; just right (informal, with confidence)準備はばっちりだ。I'm all set — everything's ready.
• はらはら擬態語Feeling成り行きを案じて気が気でない様子。花びらや涙が静かに散り落ちる様子にも使う。on edge with worry; watching anxiously / fluttering down (petals, tears)綱渡りを見て、はらはらした。Watching the tightrope walk kept me on edge.
• ぴかぴか擬態語State / texture光るほど磨かれて新しい様子。shiny; gleaming; spotlessly clean床をぴかぴかに磨いた。I polished the floor until it gleamed.
• びくびく擬態語Feeling悪いことが起きないかと、絶えずおびえている様子。叱られる・ばれるのを恐れる場面に多い。nervously fearful; jumpy; on edge (dreading something bad)ばれるのではないかとびくびくしていた。I was on edge, afraid I'd be found out.
• ぴたり擬態語Motion動いていたものが急に止まる様子。また、予想や寸法がぴったり一致する様子にも使う。coming to a dead stop / fitting or matching exactly薬を飲んだら咳がぴたりと止まった。Once I took the medicine, my cough stopped dead.
• ぴちゃぴちゃ擬音語Sound浅い水をはねかす音や、動物が舌で水をなめる音。the splashing/lapping sound of shallow water (or an animal lapping)猫が水をぴちゃぴちゃとなめている。The cat is lapping up the water.
• びっしり擬態語State / textureすきまなくぎっしり詰まっている様子。densely; packed tightly with no gaps手帳は予定でびっしりだ。My planner is packed solid with appointments.
• ひっそり擬態語Manner物音もなく静かな様子。人目を避ける意でも。quietly; silently; still (no sign of activity)夜の街はひっそりしていた。The town was still and quiet at night.
• ぴったり擬態語State / textureすきまなく合う様子。サイズ・組み合わせ・時刻に。a perfect fit; exactly matching; snuglyこのドレスは私にぴったりだ。This dress fits me perfectly.
• ひょっこり擬態語Motion思いがけず、ふいに現れる様子。前触れもなく姿を見せる意外性を表す。unexpectedly; popping up out of the blue旧友がひょっこり訪ねてきた。An old friend dropped by out of the blue.
• ひんやり擬態語State / texture冷たく感じる様子。多く心地よい涼しさに。pleasantly cool; chilly to the touch洞窟の中はひんやりしていた。It was pleasantly cool inside the cave.
• ふっくら擬態語State / textureやわらかくふくらんで、ふくよかな様子。炊きたてのご飯やほおなどに。plump, soft and full (in a pleasing way)ご飯がふっくらと炊き上がった。The rice came out plump and fluffy.
• ふらふら擬態語Body / condition足取りや気持ちが定まらず、ぐらつく様子。dizzy; unsteady; wobbly / aimlessly熱でふらふらする。I feel dizzy from the fever.
• ぷりぷり擬態語Feeling怒って機嫌が悪い様子。一方、えびなどが弾力に富む食感を表す意もあり、文脈で読み分ける。in a huff; visibly cross / plump and springy (of texture)何が気に入らないのか、彼女はぷりぷりしている。Something's upset her — she's in a real huff.
