Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• ふっくら擬態語State / textureやわらかくふくらんで、ふくよかな様子。炊きたてのご飯やほおなどに。plump, soft and full (in a pleasing way)ご飯がふっくらと炊き上がった。The rice came out plump and fluffy.
• ぷるぷる擬態語State / textureゼリーやプリンのように、弾力があって細かく揺れる様子。jiggly and wobbly with springy elasticityプリンがぷるぷる揺れている。The pudding is wobbling and jiggly.
• ふわふわ擬態語State / textureやわらかく軽い様子。物の手ざわりにも、地に足がつかない気分にも使う。soft and fluffy; light and floating焼きたてのパンはふわふわだ。Fresh-baked bread is soft and fluffy.
• べたべた擬態語State / texture表面が粘りついて手に張りつく様子。人にまとわりつく態度にも使う。sticky and tacky to the touch; clingy汗で体がべたべたする。My body feels sticky with sweat.
• ぼろぼろ擬態語State / texture使い古して傷み、ちぎれたり崩れたりした様子。物にも、心身が疲弊した状態にも使う。worn out; tattered; crumbling to pieces長年使った辞書はもうぼろぼろだ。The dictionary I've used for years is falling apart now.
• めっきり擬態語State / texture変化がはっきり分かるほど。多く季節・体力などに。markedly; noticeably (of a change)めっきり寒くなってきた。It's gotten noticeably colder.
• もちもち擬態語State / textureもちのように弾力があって、よく伸びる食感。パンや肌の質感にも。soft, springy and chewy (of texture)このうどんはもちもちしている。These udon noodles are wonderfully chewy.
