Mimetics (擬態語・擬音語)

High-frequency Japanese mimetic adverbs — うっかり, すっかり, きっちり and family. Everywhere in natural speech, rarely in textbooks. Each has a Japanese nuance note for advanced study plus an English gloss and example.

• がたがた擬音語Sound固い物がぶつかって鳴る音。寒さや恐怖で体が震える様子にも使う。rattling/clattering of hard objects / shaking and trembling風で窓ががたがた鳴っている。The windows are rattling in the wind.
• がちゃがちゃ擬音語Sound金属や食器など固い物が乱雑に触れ合って鳴る音。the clattering, jangling noise of hard objects knocking together台所で食器ががちゃがちゃと音を立てた。The dishes clattered noisily in the kitchen.
• がんがん擬音語Sound硬い物が鳴り響く音。頭がずきずき痛む様子にも。a pounding, clanging noise / a throbbing headache頭ががんがんする。My head is pounding.
• ぐつぐつ擬音語Sound鍋などが煮え立って、ゆっくり泡立つ音。煮込み料理に使う。the sound of something simmering or bubbling away鍋がぐつぐつ煮えている。The pot is simmering away.
• ごくごく擬音語Soundのどを鳴らして勢いよく飲む音・様子。the sound of gulping down a drink冷たい水をごくごく飲んだ。I gulped down the cold water.
• ざあざあ擬音語Sound雨や水が激しく流れる音。the sound of heavy rain pouring (or water gushing)雨がざあざあ降っている。The rain is pouring down.
• ぱちぱち擬音語Sound火がはぜる音や、手をたたく音。まばたきを繰り返す様子にも。crackling (of a fire) / clapping of handsたき火がぱちぱちと音を立てて燃えている。The bonfire is burning with a crackling sound.
• ぴちゃぴちゃ擬音語Sound浅い水をはねかす音や、動物が舌で水をなめる音。the splashing/lapping sound of shallow water (or an animal lapping)猫が水をぴちゃぴちゃとなめている。The cat is lapping up the water.
• わんわん擬音語Sound犬の鳴き声。大声で泣く様子にも。woof-woof (a dog's bark) / wailing loudly犬がわんわん吠えている。The dog is barking woof-woof.
